The Boring Stuff...
I keep this blog just for my friends and family to be able to keep up with where I am and what's going on. A few people have been saying they keep checking it, wondering where I am living now and what I am up to and I haven't been posting at all.
One thing I learned this summer (I spent the summer in the south eastern US and in southern Asia) is that I am not in love with the south. I am the embodiment of the west in mind and spirit and I am horrified of alligators. Because graduate funding was so tight this year I am on a sabbatical and doing a lot of playing. It's been wonderful. Most days I feel like a little kid living a dream. I am living in Huntsville full time, finally sold the condo in Salt Lake, and I feel a sense of freedom and frivolity that I am trying to absorb completely.
I was given an offer to finish my PhD at Florida State the other day. I'd start next year and it's in the area of rodent evolutionary genetics. The project sounds amazing, and it is of course a great opportunity but I really don't want to live in the area. The west is my home, it is who I am. I wonder why so many of the opportunities of my life lately have been opened there. I wonder if there is some lesson the south has to teach me, or some reason I am supposed to fall in love with it. So far it just mostly scares me.
So, now I am back to this place. What am I doing next year? Am I ready to forge into school and just go for it or am I making too much of a home right here. I don't know. I do know that I have a limited time to figure it out before application deadlines for next year are here. What if I make the wrong choice? How will I know? The magic 8 ball tells me that I will know when the time is right. Should I believe it?
